Located in the heart of the country, Kansas City is only a 3-hour flight from either coast. The City of Kansas City, Missouri, touts 220 parks, 134 miles of trails and bikeways, 29 lakes, 103 playgrounds and 119 monuments.

This area included Westport Landing and in 1850 was incorporated as the Town of Kansas. City founders derived the name from the Kansas, or Kaw, River which was named for the Kansa Indians. The state of Missouri then incorporated the area as the City of Kansas in 1853 and renamed it Kansas City in 1889.
Celebrated cultural traditions include Kansas City jazz; theater, as a historical center of the Vaudevillian Orpheum circuit in the 1920s; the nickname City of Fountains; the Chiefs and Royals sports franchises; and cuisine such as Kansas City–style barbecue and strip steak.
Many of our everyday inventions came from Kansas City. Samuel Coffman invented electric clippers, and Marion Trazzolo patented the Teflon-coated frying pan (known today as a “Happy Pan”). Walt Disney also lived in Kansas City and kept a live mouse as a pet.

The Chiefs won three AFL championships, in 1962, 1966, and 1969, and were the second AFL team (after the New York Jets) to defeat an NFL team in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game, when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV.
In 1838, Kansas City was founded and eventually surpassed neighboring Westport to become the predominant city west of St.Louis. The area was also a focal point in the westward expansion of the United States, as both the Santa Fe and Oregon trails ran nearby.
The government of Kansas City is officially non-partisan; however, Democrats have long held a significant dominance of politics throughout the city. In the last 100 years, only four Republicans have served as mayor.
